We ALL Need to Do Something

The past 18 months have been absolutely chaotic.  The Trump administration has fired over a quarter million people from the federal workforce, dismantled entire agencies of the government, decimated our public health infrastructure and research, unleashed punitive tariffs on our allies, insisted that public servants be prosecuted as retribution, threatened to take Greenland by force, caused instability among our NATO allies, started an unprovoked war of choice against Iran causing massive disruption to our economy, and turned out-of-control and unaccountable ICE goon squads loose into cities to cause mayhem and shoot citizens who were legally protesting all of the above. 

The cumulative effect of all of this is to keep us off balance and afraid.  What crazy thing is he going to do next?  And it’s more than just HIS efforts… he’s not smart enough to come up with all this mayhem.  No, the real brains behind all this chaos are Christian Nationalists, the ones who wrote Project 2025.  They want Americans to be so dazed and confused by all this insanity that we just give up and stop paying attention. 

But we MUST NOT give up!  I think it’s time to remind ourselves of the Main Thing we need to do this year.  We need to wrestle his power away from him.  And the only way to do that is to overwhelm the polls on November 3, 2026 with votes for Democrats.  Between now and then we need to stay informed and active, but our Main Thing is creating a monumental Blue Wave in November. 

We ALL need to DO SOMETHING.  We ALL need to get involved in the political process. Yes, we can participate in protests, strikes, boycotts, and any non-violent civil disobedience.  But more importantly, we need to get organized.  Are you connected to one or more candidates who are running this fall?  Supporting them in whatever way you can?  For some that means donating to campaigns.  For others it means helping people register to vote, knocking on doors, making calls and writing postcards to get out the vote.  Stuff you never thought you’d do but now realize that you must because the fate of our country lies with YOU. 

For some, it will mean rethinking longtime assumptions, like believing you would always vote Republican.  But you’ve seen too much and now you’re wondering if maybe your votes for Trump were unwise.  For you, the time has come to change your mind and your vote.  Maybe in the future sanity will return to the Republican Party and you can go back to voting for them.  But not this year.  This year we’re voting as if our very right to vote is under attack.  And that’s not even hyperbole.  Trump said this on February 2^nd, 2026: “The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over — we should take over the voting — the voting in at least many, 15 places.’  The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.”

Nobody is coming to rescue us, so we have to rescue ourselves.  I’m more involved and active in politics than I ever expected to be, because it’s my obligation as an American.  If I want good government, it’s my job to work for it.  It’s yours too.  What are you doing?  If you need ideas, contact the Black Hawk County Democratic headquarters (www.blackhawkcountydemocrats.com) and ask how you can volunteer.  It will take all of us.  If we can take the US House and Senate, as well as the Iowa Legislature and Governor’s office, we can put the brakes on much of this chaos.  Republicans and their billionaire donors will outspend us, but we can outwork them.  Put your shoulder to the wheel, and let’s work together to rescue our state and our nation!
